There is no denying the fact that our nation is getting bigger. Not bigger by population (although that is true as well), but bigger in our waist lines. For this reason dieting, exercise, and paying attention what we eat is becoming more and more important to more and more people. Nearly all aspects of society are being affected by this and the world famous Girl Scout cookie sale is not immune.

In 2009, for the first time ever, the Girl Scouts sold fewer cookies than they did the year before. Now a percentage of that is probably attributable to the slacking economy but a much bigger segment was because people are trying to watch what they eat and, let’s face it, Girl Scout cookies aren’t exactly health food.

So with sales slacking and people trending away from buying cookies, many troops are beginning to look for a new Girl Scout fundraiser. This doesn’t mean that the Girls Scouts are going to ditch their world famous cookie sales in favor of some other program. But what it does mean is that the Girl Scouts are realizing that there is a need for some kind of alternative Girl Scout fundraiser.

And with that, the search has begun for new club fundraisers that meet the ideals of the Girl Scouts. These programs need to be fun and profitable, but they also need to make sense as a supplemental program. If they have a broader message or an educational aspect, those are just extra benefits that are much appreciated.

Eco friendly programs like our flower fundraiser and our coffee and tea fundraiser are extremely popular Girl Scouts fundraising programs. They promote a much healthier image than selling cookies and offer a much greater profit margin that goes back to your troop than the cookies ever could.

But we understand that Girl Scout cookies are perhaps the most iconic of all fund raising programs and so we are not necessarily recommending you not sell them at all.  Instead, what we have found works best is to use one of our healthier fund raisers and offer it as an alternative to people.  It’s a great way to reign in customers who may not buy cookies but would love to buy some beautiful flower bulbs.
