When you are planning your school fundraisers one of the topics that should definitely be discussed is how you plan to market your program. Think that sounds complicated? It isn’t; not at all. One really simple marketing tool that schools around the country use to market with is a school fundraiser flyer. The key is making sure you get the right information on the fundraiser flyer and getting them put in places that they will be seen.

There are a few pieces of information you absolutely must include on your schools fundraising flyer for it to be even remotely effective. Participants need to know when the school fundraisers start and end and when their order needs to be turned in. They need to know who to make checks out to. They need to know what they are selling. But maybe the most important thing to be sure and include is the reason you are raising money and how much needs to be raised. One of the most effective school fundraising flyers I ever saw showed a big picture of the playground the school was going to get if they raised $5,000. And you know what? They made their goal and then some.

Don’t worry if you don’t personally have great design skills to put together a winning flyer.  Most parent groups will have at least one person who is skilled with computers who can put together a pretty snazzy looking poster for the school.

Once you have your school fundraiser flyer designed and printed it will be time to post it around the school and, if possible, in the community. At the school you will want to post the flyer in prominent locations like the main entrances, next to the cafeteria, and by the gyms. If you have access to a sandwich board you might want to make a larger version that you can put out in front of the school that parents can see when they are dropping off or picking up their students.

Try working with local businesses like fast food restaurants and coffee shops that have ‘local happenings’ boards. If they will let you post your fundraiser flyer you can get a great deal more exposure and maybe even some customers that your students and their parents wouldn’t have reached otherwise.

Remember, in many ways raising money is a numbers game and the more awareness you can create for your program, the more money you will raise.
