It’s not secret now to anyone who hasn’t been stranded on a remote island with the cast from Lost that obesity is a serious problem among school aged kids these days. And really, it would appear that it’s not from a lack of options or energy being put into healthy food programs. But there is an AP article out today that can be found at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_school_lunches that explains that even with healthier options available, many school kids just aren’t taking the bait and are instead opting for the unhealthy options. So how can make a change here? What kinds of things can we do to send a different message? To tell the students that unhealthy foods are a legitimate problem that really deserves their attention.
One area that we decided to focus on was offering healthy foods for school fundraisers. We realized that there was this terrible message being sent to students when everyone is preaching about eating better and then we go sell candy bars and cookie dough to raise money. It was just ridiculous and so we set out to make the situation better.
It wasn’t as easy as you might guess to come up with healthy foods for school fundraisers that were not just healthy, but met the needs of schools raising money. You couldn’t just offer up heads of lettuce and call it a day. The foods in healthy food fundraisers had to be delicious, have adequate shelf lives, and offer great profits or they just wouldn’t work and no one would make the switch.
We first added the Healthy Creations natural food fundraiser. It features a great line of organic and all natural dry food mixes that you sell from a catalogue. The fact that the mixes are dry means that they last a fairly long time on the shelf and need only simple ingredients like eggs and water for cooking. Some examples of products in this healthy food fundraiser are 10 grain bread, Gluten free double chocolate cookies, and organic pretzels.
Another option that we added recently is the Trail Mix fundraiser. It features healthy snacks and trail mixes and makes a terrific alternative to “less healthy” foods. You can also choose to do the Coffee and Tea fundraiser which steers well clear of any unhealthy items.
It’s just so readily apparent to us that something needs to be done. When schools choose healthier fund raising options, they are sending a very clear and consistent message that health isn’t just a buzzword. No, when you choose healthy foods for your school fundraisers, you are strongly reinforcing the message that our health and our decisions do matter and that’s a very important message indeed.
