“How long should my fundraiser last?” is a question that seems to come up quite a bit so I thought I would take some time today to share with you our thoughts on the duration of your sale. While this may seem like a really insignificant detail in the grand scheme of choosing the right fundraising ideas and then actually getting people to participate, it’s actually very, very important as you shall soon see. This is part of our series on how to do fundraisers that designed to help you through all of the steps of planning and executing a terrific fund raiser.
The length of time that your fundraiser lasts can be one of the most important factors in determining how much money you raise. I mean, if you only sold items for one day, you would be severely limited in the amount of money you could bring in if only because there just wasn’t enough time. But it’s not as if you can extend this logic and just say “well if we sold $100 worth of stuff in 1 day, then obviously we can sell $10,000 worth of stuff in 100 days!” Your sales will likely start to taper off as your sellers lose interest and as you run out of potential customers.
So is there an ideal duration for a fundraiser? Yes!
We have found that 2 to 3 weeks is ideal for the vast majority of groups. Less than 2 weeks and you start running into the “we just didn’t have enough time” excuse. And fundraisers that last longer than 3 weeks can leave people feeling apathetic at the beginning and then have them forget all about it by the end. 2 to 3 weeks gives everyone enough time to get done what they need to do and is sufficiently short that there is a sense of urgency which helps create excitement.
