One of the first questions most people who are planning on doing fundraisers ask is “How much profit will I make with this fundraiser?” and it is a vitally important question to answer. The last time I checked, not many groups were having their funding increased and most were in fact struggling just to cover their budgets. Groups’ leaders and fundraising coordinators need to know just how much they can expect to gain from a fundraiser before putting the group members through the effort required to raise money.
The answer to “how much profit will I make with this fundraiser?”, as with most other things, is that it depends. Fundraising profits can range from 15% all the way to 100% (we’ll explain 100% profit fundraising later). The most common way that fundraising profit levels are broken down is by the number of items you sell. A typical breakdown is something like 150 items or more for 25% profit, 200 items or more for 30% profit, etc. Something to keep in mind is that some companies charge shipping on top of the order, no matter how many items you sell. Other companies will pay for shipping as long as you meet the minimum order level. This will obviously affect your profit margin and should be considered when choosing your fundraising program.
Some fundraisers offer a flat profit percentage no matter how many items you sell. These fundraisers typically have a higher minimum order to help the fundraising company cover the costs of their brochures and shipping and general sales expenses.
Recently, some companies have started offering 100% profit fundraisers. The way this works is that when you place your order, they will give you enough product to cover the cost of the rest of what you buy. You are still paying for the product but once you have sold the “free” items, the rest of your fundraiser is 100% profit.
