There are thousands and thousands of different fundraising ideas and fundraising products that you can sell to raise money. At Go Green Fundraising, we obviously hope that those products are healthy and eco friendly because that is important to us but we understand that not everyone doing fundraisers shares our interest. What everyone IS interested in is selling as many products and raising as much money as possible. That is why we’ve put together some tips about how to sell a fundraising product.
Selling a fundraising product is very much like selling any other product. Product knowledge, enthusiasm, price, desirability, all of these things go into a sale and it’s vital that your sellers understand this. Many people approach fundraising as a necessary evil but the more seriously you take your sale, the better your results should be.
Product knowledge is not hard to come by. Most fundraising products are incredibly simple and don’t take much explaining. But knowing, for example, that the coffee from our coffee fundraiser comes pre-ground and is freshly roasted or that the canvas in our dodo bag fundraiser is made in the U.S.A. can make the difference between making a sale or not.
When picking the program you want to do, spend some time talking to your fund raising rep to learn that FAQ’s about whatever you will be selling. It doesn’t take much time and can really lead to more money for your group.
We’ve talked before about how to motivate your fundraising sellers but the point bears repeating. There is perhaps no more important factor in making a sale than being excited about the product you are selling and the reason you are selling it.
Going door to door with a pitch of “I’m selling candles for school. Wanna buy one?” might work on occasion but your success rate won’t be too high. How much better does the following sound – “Hi, I’m Max and I go to Memorial Elementary School. We are trying to build a new playground and are selling candles to raise the money. They are really nice candles made from natural ingredients in the U.S.A. and they only cost $12 each. Would you be willing to maybe buy one or two to help out?” You’ve explained who you are, why you are raising money, and what you are selling. You’ve given a couple of benefits of the product, given them the price, and you’ve asked for the sale. At this point, it’s up to the customer but you can rest assured that you did everything you could to make a sale.
If you are in charge of the fundraiser, whether you have sales experience or not, it is a good idea to learn and go over that basic sales model with your sellers. The following information should be conveyed every time they try and sell something:
Personal introduction
Basic product information including price and 1 or 2 benefits
The reason for the fundraiser
Ask for the sale
It takes no more than 20-30 seconds to give that info and it makes absolutely no difference what you are actually selling.
