How to start a Recycling Club

For schools, one of the easiest and most profound ways to teach your students about being better stewards for the planet is to start a recycling club. Getting your recycling club started can be a bit of work though and this article is here to help you get started with some great tips.

There are a few things that you just have to plan out before you can get started collecting items to be recycled. These include finding a manager for the program, deciding where the recycling bins will be placed and making sure that you have enough bins, discussing how you will advertise it to the school, and finalizing a method for how the materials will be picked up and transported to a recycling facility.

Picking a leader for your school recycling club is a great place to start. This person needs to be your spokesperson and your champion for dealing with other individuals as it will take quite a few groups of people to pull off a successful recycling club program. For example, the leader will need to make sure that the principal and possibly the school board are okay with the program being held on campus. They will also need to make sure the janitorial staff knows about the recycling club so that the materials are not just dumped in with the regular trash. Science teachers usually make the best leaders for recycling groups because of their backgrounds.

It can be difficult to determine until you actually begin collecting items, but you will need to make a guess as to the number of recycling bins you will need and where the best places to put them are. Usually you will want at least 1 bucket per classroom and maybe some additional ones for common areas like the cafeteria. Some groups forego having buckets altogether and just have a large collection area that everyone knows about.

Advertising your recycling club is absolutely key to being successful. Some of the smartest ways to advertise include creating a lesson plan that can be built around recycling and environmentalism and your recycling bins themselves can be a great advertisement.

There are a few different ways that materials can be picked up and transported to processing facilities but it is imperative to determine this before you start. The easiest way is to contact your local recycling program and see if their trucks can just pick up your items when they drive by your school. If that doesn’t work, or if there isn’t a local recycling program, you will need to have a parent, a teacher, or a student take the items to the processing facility.

You can make your recycling club into whatever you want it to be. We hope that these tips at least help you get started down the path towards increasing recycling efforts in our nation’s schools.
