Planning Your Fundraiser

The point of fundraising is to raise as much money as you possibly can, right? Well, the first step in that process is to spend a bit of time planning your fundraiser. Without a good plan in place, your chances of meeting your fund raising goals are pretty low. Conversely, a well thought out and planned fundraiser can catapult you on your way to fund raising glory. We’ve laid this out very simply based on answering the classic who, what, when, and why questions as the next in our series on How to Do Fundraisers.

You should start with deciding the reason you are having a fund raiser. This is the WHY. Many groups have fallen into the habit of doing a fundraiser every year from X date through Y date without have a good reason other than it being “when we raise money”. A key to success is having a compelling reason that you are raising money. It can help motivate your sellers and gives your customers a tangible reason to help support your cause.

Once you have determined the WHY, it’s time to decide the WHO. This is when you decide who will be on your fund raising team. I know it may sound presumptuous to assume you are going to have a team, but trust me, you will want one. Unless you are raising money all by yourself or for a group of 10 people or less, it can be a huge amount of work managing a program and you will appreciate having some help.

So that’s the WHY and the WHO. Now you need to determine the WHEN. Some products, like our flower bulb fundraiser, are seasonal so the when matters very much. But even if the product is available all year long, you still want to set start and end dates. It helps keep everyone organized and giving everyone a little pressure towards the end is a great way to motivate your sellers. Having an end date and planning for when items will be delivered can also be helpful to your customers. It lets them know when to expect items which can be reassuring when they are pre-ordering items.

The WHAT may be the most difficult part of the planning process. This is when you decided the specific program you will do from all of the fundraising ideas out there. Discuss with your group what kinds of items they want to sell and talk to potential customers to see what items they want to buy. Find out what items your group has sold in the past and see if any of them were substantially more successful than others. You can also call a fundraising expert like the ones we employ to talk through what ideas will work best for your group. Our experts can be reached at 877-448-9746.

Just remember, having a plan is extremely important to the success of your efforts. Take a bit of time and make sure you’ve at least thought through the whole process and the entire experience should go much more smoothly and raise substantially more money.
